Johan studied at the University of Pretoria, and was employed by the Department of Justice as a state prosecutor until he commenced his articles of clerkship in 1995 at a Pretoria law firm.

He was admitted as an attorney of the High Court of South Africa in 1997, and he joined the firm as a professional assistant during the same year. He initially dealt with criminal law matters and he also practised in the family law department.

Johan was appointed as a partner in 2000. He is currently heading the conveyancing department and deals extensively with all property related matters and bond registrations in favour of all the major financial institutions.
